Ear Reshaping Pre-Post Operative Care

PRE Operative Instructions

You must be fasted prior to your procedure - DO NOT EAT, DRINK (even water) or CHEW anything for at least 6 hours before your procedure. The hospital will ring you the day before your procedure to confirm your admission time.

Notify Dr Lim of any other medication that you are currently taking.

Do not take any medication that contains aspirin, or take anti-inflammatory or herbal medication for two weeks before your procedure. Aspirin thins the blood and this can result in unnecessary blood loss during your procedure.

Please stop smoking four weeks before and four weeks after your procedure. Smoking decreases blood flow to skin and may result in tissue loss and delay the healing process.
Do not drink alcohol for the two days before and two days after your operation as it can interfere with the sedation you are given.

Arnica, available from your health food store, is recommended to be taken before and after surgery. Arnica is available in tablet, spray and papule form. Please take as directed a day prior to surgery. Vitamin C is to be taken two weeks before and two weeks after surgery. Arnica may help to reduce bruising and Vitamin C may help to assist healing, both may result in a reduced healing time.

Do not wear any nail polish, jewellery or makeup to the hospital and leave all valuables at home.

If you have a gastric band you will need to have a fluid diet the day before your surgery and fast for at least 8hrs on the day of your procedure.

Do not to drive for a week after surgery. The anaesthetic you are given may make you drowsy. You will also have bandages around your head for that week and this may obstruct your peripheral vision.

You will need someone to drive you home from the hospital.

Wear a comfortable button up shirt so that you can slip in to it easily after the procedure.

Wash your hair before surgery as you will not be able to wash it for a week following surgery.

POST Operative Instructions

Do not remove any of the bandages around your ears until seen by Dr Lim.

You will be given oral pain relief to take home, take as prescribed by Dr Lim.

Dr Lim will prescribe antibiotics to take for the first week after surgery. It is very important that you take the full course for it to be effective. This will help prevent any post-op infection.

My staff will contact you daily for the first few days to make sure that you are feeling comfortable and that you are getting enough pain relief.

You will need to see Dr Lim one week after the procedure for removal of bandages and a general check-up.

Following removal of the bandages you will need to wear a head band or sports sweat band for another two weeks at night only.

No contact sports or any activity that can bend your ears back for six weeks.

Do not wear earrings for six weeks to avoid infection.

Contact the rooms if any of the following develop;

  • If bandages become unbearably tight
  • If bleeding occurs
  • Severe pain
  • Temperature higher than 38° C or chills

Both Dr Lim and his nurse are available to you in the post-op period and indeed at any time during your recovery. Should you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to call the rooms.
